Literacy
Literacy at Maningrida College
Maningrida College uses research-based literacy programs tailored to each year level, ensuring students develop strong reading, writing, and language skills throughout their education.
Early Years and Primary Programs
Jolly Phonics (Preschool to Year 3)
Jolly Phonics is our foundational spelling program that teaches 42 sounds in a specific order through an engaging, multi-sensory approach. The College has a comprehensive range of resources to support this program in the classroom.
Words Their Way (Years 4 to 9)
Words Their Way is our developmental spelling program for middle years students. Students work with level-appropriate word sorts to improve their understanding of written language and spelling patterns.
Accelerated Literacy (Preschool to Year 9)
Accelerated Literacy is the main literacy program used across Maningrida College from Preschool to Year 9. Teachers receive ongoing professional development throughout the year to build their knowledge and support classroom practice. The College maintains a well-resourced bank of texts and planning documents and provides opportunities for collaborative planning and teaching.
Senior Secondary Programs
Essential English (Years 10-12)
Essential English is available to all Senior Secondary students at Maningrida College. Students who successfully complete Essential English satisfy the literacy requirements for both the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) and the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET).
Through Essential English, students learn to summarise and analyse texts, as well as create their own writing for different contexts. The program is designed to support English as Second Language (ESL) learners by developing awareness of how English is used in various environments. As students build understanding of the socio-cultural aspects of language, their confidence and fluency in English develops.
