Maningrida Homelands
Maningrida College services over 20 Homeland school sites across the region. At any one time, there are usually 5-10 sites in operation. How these schools operate depends on seasonal conditions, road accessibility, and community ceremonies and funerals, all of which can significantly impact student numbers, buildings, facilities, and local teacher availability.
Current Homeland Sites
Recent sites visited include Bolkdjam, Buluhkaduru, Yikkarrakal, Mumeka, Ankabadburri, Gochan Jiny-Jirra, Gorrong Gorrong (ceremony site), Ji Bol Bol, Gamardi, Wurdeja, Ji-malawa, Ji-marda, Yilan, and An-Murnabarra A-jirra (ceremony site). These locations change as communities move.
Program Structure
Classes typically comprise of students from Preschool to Middle School. Local teachers form the backbone of the Homeland Schools system, providing continuity and deep knowledge of their communities and students.
Facilities vary across sites. Several have teacher accommodation and a classroom, though these are usually very basic. Other sites have only rudimentary school buildings. Teachers typically visit each site 1-2 times per week, delivering lessons and leaving work for local teachers to continue in their absence. Depending on the community, teachers use a combination of day visits and overnight stays.

- Knowledge of all year levels and ESL teaching approaches
- Extensive teaching strategies that cater for a range of ages and abilities in remote settings
- 4WD driving knowledge and skills, as many sites are only accessible by four-wheel drive
