Learning on Country (LoC)

The Learning on Country (LoC) program is a culturally relevant school-based program delivered in partnership with the Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation’s Djelk Rangers. The program supports remote Indigenous students in developing skills, knowledge, and confidence along a pathway to employment within the Djelk Ranger unit and other local community employment sectors.

Objectives

Our key objectives include:

  • Providing practical and engaging activities that increase the inter-generational transmission of Indigenous traditional and cultural knowledge and customary practice
  • Combining Indigenous traditional and cultural learning with western knowledge and technology to deliver a strong ‘two-way’ educational program—Bininj and Balanda
  • Improved student learning, with an emphasis on literacy and numeracy
  • Linking VET and curriculum-based subjects with experiential ‘on-country’ learning and work experience
  • Delivering Conservation and Land Management (CLM) training

LoC History

Maningrida College was a pioneering school of the Learning on Country educational initiative. The program received formal Federal Government funding in August 2013 and has since gained strong community recognition and support.

The success of LoC in Maningrida is attributed to the genuine commitment of Maningrida College in implementing a strategic framework to support program delivery, and the solid partnership with Djelk Rangers.

Our Achievements

Our Achievements

In a relatively short time, LoC has achieved significant outcomes for participating students, including employment placements and Conservation and Land Management (CLM) Certificate I and II completions. Through the program, we are nurturing the next generation of Indigenous rangers, leaders, and traditional owners to care for country, preserve culture, and be strong members of their community.
